like an encore of yesterday, we had a bout of torrential rain overnight. no thundering this time (at least that i can remember), but once more i thank mother nature for providing us (and our plants) with more rain.

i could've slept some more, the cool breeze wafting in from the window perfect for inducing sleep. when i finally got up at 9:30am, i had a little headache. not enough water? who knows. i was surprised to see my roommate had already left for her office. must be an early morning meeting.

i left the house by 10:40am. my mother called me earlier and told me about a star market buy 2 get 3 free offer on coca-cola. so i went down to take a look. a 12-pack of coke goes for $10 at star market; with the offer, i ended up paying $20 for 5 cases of coke. i loaded up my rear bike baskets and rode gingerly to the cafe.

first thing i saw when i got to the cafe were the defoliated hyacinth bean plants. when we came back from new york on monday to drop off some supplies, we noticed a long vine had been severed. we didn't think a day or two later, the rabbit (we're assuming) would come back and finish the job, basically removing the rest of the vines. my father used some straws and chicken wires to protect the last remaining vine. the rabbit however did touch any of the impatiens and geraniums, even though there was plenty of health looking foliage. so basically another reason to hate rabbits.

today wasn't too crazy. my sister had some catered meal customers, but seems like a lot of people were taking the week off for 4th of july. my mother brought some braised duck neck/gizzard/feet to the cafe and we snacked on those while drinking some ice cold sour plum drinks. i asked my sister about hailey's condition: she said the doctor says she has maybe 3-4 more months to live. that's sort of relief, because the way my sister was describing it on monday sounded like we needed to put her to sleep this week.

not sure who contacted who, but my sister said my roommate lauryn has decided to move to the soon-to-be-vacated apartment room above my sister's place in august. on the one hand i'm glad she's leaving early - gives me august all to myself - but on the other hand i'm a little hurt that doesn't like living here enough that she wanted to move out early. i can understand why she'd want to be - closer to her office, she'd live there last year, bedroom has AC, closer to trader joe's (her favorite super market) - but still.

i left the cafe around 4:30pm when it didn't seem like it'd get busy anymore. i went to my sister's place briefly to check on hailey before leaving.

it was pretty hot inside the house even though it was just 78 degrees. i think it had something to do with the humidity, which was at 68%. with rescheduled street cleaning tomorrow, i moved my motorcycle to the other side of the street. i noticed it was a little dirty so decided to leave it uncovered, and hoping that some rain will give it a free wash.

italian sausage & broccoli risotto
(2-4 servings)

32 oz. carton chicken broth
(equivalent of 2 cans)

2 tbsp butter
1 onion, chopped
4 garlic cloves, chopped
6 italian sausages

1 cup arborio rice
1 cup white wine
1 tbsp red pepper flakes
fresh ground pepper

bowl frozen broccoli, steamed
1/2 cup parmesan cheese

warm up chicken broth in separate pot, turn off heat and cover. in large pot cook onion and garlic in butter. add sausages by squeezing out of casing and forming small meatballs. toss in leftover casings. once sausages cooked, add rice, coating in juices. add wine and spices, simmer until most of liquids gone. began adding chicken broth in 1/2 cup increments, stirring constantly to prevent scorching, add more broth when most of liquids absorbed. separately thaw frozen broccoli in microwave or steamer, 2 minutes. when risotto nearly done, mix in broccoli. add parmesan cheese, mix until melted.

i started cooking around 7pm, making my risotto recipe. in hindsight, slaving over the stove for an hour on an already hot day wasn't the smartest idea. my frozen broccoli were a little old and had lost their bright colors - still edible, but i wouldn't serve it to customers. i scooped out a third for dinner, while saving the rest for two more portions.

so lauryn didn't get home around 6pm, but instead came home around 9pm, right when it started thundering and raining heavily. fortunately she had an umbrella and looked dry when she stepped inside. i didn't bother asking where she was, but i assumed it involved dinner, because she didn't make any food, and wait to the bathroom to take a shower before returning to her bedroom.
