i went out for a run this morning, first time this month. temperature was in the 40's but i wore a pair of running shorts, long-sleeved pullover, and some gloves. i left a bit before 10:30am. it was a good run in that i wasn't struggling and still had enough stamina left to go a few more miles if i wanted. sure, i'm running to keep fit and lose weight, but i'm also listening to my history podcast and admiring all the pretty spring flowers i see along the way: blue siberian squills, yellow daffodils, purple dwarf irises, white magnolias. i made it home by 11:30am.

when i got there there was nobody around. it was the first time i was in the garden since late fall. my plot was a bit weedy, a lot of grass and creeping buttercup that needed to be dug out. since nobody was here yet, i got some tools from the shed and started pulling up weeds. anne marie finally showed up around 1:20pm. skip was nowhere to be found, and anne marie couldn't reach him.
the lilac and rose in question were located in a recently vacated plot. they were to be moved to the front common bed. i was tasked with digging up a dense mat of irises in the front bed. and by dense anne marie had to bring out her gardening knife to cut below the roots so the irises can be released. i also used various combinations of shovels to finally pry the irises out of the ground. we cut them into smaller pieces and put them into plastic grocery bags at the back of the garden for whoever wants them. afterwards anne marie got me to dig a hole for the lilac. it wasn't too hard, it was pretty good soft soil. we left it at that, anne marie said she'd get another volunteer to help her dig out the lilac and move it. i left by 2:40pm, with some unwanted white spring ephemerals i dug up from the common garden. i planted them in my own front garden when i got back home.
i walked to star market to grab an easter ham on sale for 97¢/lbs. i then piled a grocery list before heading down to market basket around 3:30pm. it was actually warm and sunny when i was the community garden, but by the time i left, the sky had turned overcast and temperature had dropped. i got some pastrami on sale, some frozen meals, and a few other items.
i didn't go out the rest of the day. in the early evening i finally got around to piercing drainage holes with a heated awl in the plastic cups i got last week. these 16oz. market basket cups are frosted white and made from a thicker plastic material. i still prefer the clear cups i used to get from dollar tree; even though they were more brittle, the fact that they came in various colors helped me organize my seedlings. i didn't have time to plant anything, nor getting around to filling the pots with soil. instead i soaked a bunch of seeds: long beans (12), blue beans (12), bitter melons (12), buttercup squash (12), and hyacinth beans (12). i texted ann this morning, told her to start her bitter melon seeds as well.

i wanted to do some taxes today but kept getting distracted, or possibly procrastinating the inevitable. tax day in massachusetts isn't until the 19th (wednesday). i'm going to try and get some numbers into the taxing software before going to bed tonight, so i can say at least i didn't something.
