this actually isn't the first time i wet the bed in my adult life. a long time ago - in my 20's - the same thing happened. i was describing the even to coworkers, who laughed and said it definitely classifies as "wetting the bed."
so that's how my saturday started, with a bout of incontinence. briefly i wondered to myself if i should start thinking about wearing adult diapers to bed. i'd say it's a sign of aging but like i said, same thing happened to me when i was younger. hopefully it's not a recurring thing.
i was excited to go to the cafe today, knowing my sister wouldn't be there. she's pretty awful to work with, and nearly all of my cafe stresses have to do with her. when she's not there, we all work in unison, in harmony. it was only supposed to be my father, but my mother came as well, followed by my 2nd aunt, who's there on saturdays normally.
it ended up being pretty busy, but nothing crazy. after a slow week, we had a really hectic day yesterday, and today was just a continuation of that. we sold 14 bentos and 8 beef noodle soup, the two most popular items today. ramen noodles were also popular. it's ironic because earlier this week we barely sold any bentos, and wednesday we actually sold zero, which almost never happens. my father worked the front taking walk-in orders and making the drinks, while my mother, my 2nd aunt, and myself were in the back fulfilling orders.
it was my first time working with the new tablet installed with the square app. i had it set up so it'd send additional notifications whenever an order would come in (via the mail app) but i found it unnecessary and disabled that feature soon afterwards. early on when we were still adjusting to online orders, we'd often miss incoming orders. now we're pretty used to it, learning to listen to the distinctive sound of the thermal printer printing out a new order. we also installed a ticket holder a few months ago, which makes it easier to read incoming orders.
the month of january has been pretty good despite being the slowest of of the months going back to july. it far exceded what we made last january by more than 3x (which was before we started online ordering).
my new 4.5qt crockpot arrived at belmont this morning. my parents brought it to the cafe. my mother chastised me while i was setting it up, said it was a waste of money and space, and we already have at least two additional crockpots in the basement. i've already checked those out, they're much too big and wouldn't fit in our current space. i ended up making a new batch of tea eggs, as we were starting to run out with all the bento boxes we sold. this allowed me to cook 30 eggs (normally it's just 20) since we have a larger crockpot now.
my father realized the itemized checkout screen on the android tablet is the same as the one on the ipad tablet connected to the cash register. what this meant is he can take home the android tablet and rearrange the layout to make it easier to use. this was something we never thought about doing when our backup square device was my sister's old iphone. with its smaller screen, it always displayed a reduced version of the checkout screen.
my sister was home all day, so she really had no excuse to not come in and work today. after we closed, she sheepishly showed up with her dog and asked if we were busy (we had the busiest day this week, fortunately we had 4 people working, unlike yesterday, when it was just my parents since my sister decided to take the day off).
i rode the bike to belmont while my parents stayed behind to clean before leaving the cafe. first thing i did when i got to my parents' place was to check on the status of my mustard green seedlings. they've been on the heat pad for a week now, 2 more seedlings have germinated, but disappointingly the other 4 seeds are still dormant. if they won't sprout with the heat pad, i don't know what else to do. i added the seedlings to the aeroponic container. the seedlings i transplanted last week don't seem to have gotten any bigger. the leca pellets were wet though, which means the net cups are getting properly hydrated. i think the problem has to do with the lighting, not enough during the day. i'll have to check what happened when i did my first hydroponic experiment, how long it took those mustard greens to grow to size.
it was just a few short hours before dinner. my mother made two dishes of simply stirfry, one with bokchoi greens, the other some salted pork. i also helped them activate their new credit cards, and helped my father with some square
checkout layout issues. finally we ordered some stuff off of amazon: an electric dough maker with ferment function (joydeem JD-HMJ7L), a spin mop bucket, and another pair of fleece jogger pants for my father. my father said tonight he never wants to wear jeans again after discovering sweat pants. i may have accidentally got him hooked on the uniform of the lazy.
i didn't leave until 8:20pm. i got a chance to try out the new head light that arrived from temu a few days ago. it had a wrap-around design using COB LED's and i've seen some other bikers wearing them at night. i already have 3 lights when i ride at nights during the winter (front and rear lights, and a rear helmet light), so i don't really need more. at the same time, additional visibility is never a bad thing when it comes to night riding. i don't really notice this new head light because my front light is already plenty bright, but i do notice it when i turn my head and look at street signs, they really pop in the reflection. i don't know if i'll use it on a daily basis, but i might carry it with me just in case when my front light runs out of batteries.
i didn't even have time to shower when i got back home. after throwing my dirty sheets into the washer, i started watching the lakers-celtics game on ABC. it was an exciting game, celtics ended up winning in overtime. they were due for a victory, after losing their last 3 games.
i drained my mung beans this morning and now i'm rinsing them whenever i use the bathroom (i'm germinating them there because it's the warmest part of the house). so far none of them have sprouted yet,
but it's been less than 24 hours since i stopped soaking them. as for my fermenting sweet rice, something good is definitely happening: they've started to produce liquid and the rice have started to float. excellent sign that the jiuniang process is working. i won't taste test them until monday at the earliest, the usual rule is 3 days of fermentation at least.
