it took just 15 minutes from the time i woke up this morning to when i left the house to go see the matinee of star trek in harvard square. these recent hollywood reboots of old film franchises have been very successful, both critically and financially (batman, james bond). jj abrams directed this new version star trek, a prequel of sorts, showing how our favorite members of starfleet got together in the first place. abrams may be known as the creator of television shows like fringe and lost, but i know him best as the creator of alias.

there was a good amount of people for an early morning matinee, which bodes well for the movie's weekend box office tally. a group of men sat behind me, spaced a seat apart from one another in that way some guys sit so others won't think they're gay. one of the men questioned the decision, but his friend told him it was so they could have more elbow room. early in the movie, one of the men raced out to go use the bathroom. total amateur, i thought, poor soda management, as i nursed my own small cup of root beer. but midway through the film i started to get that bathroom feeling myself. in my mind i was calculating how fast i could race upstairs, relieve myself, and then race back down. 2 minutes. the next step was to wait for a lull in the movie, but there were no breaks and i didn't want to miss anything. all i could really do was sit with my legs crossed and try not to think about it. fortunately i made it all the way to the end but my viewing enjoyment was marred by the fact that i desperately had to go pee. no more soda next time!

to be continued... bottomline: great movie!

i was surprised by how pleasant the weather was today. it seems these days if the weather isn't too hot then it's too cold, or maybe it's raining. but today was just right. the forecast was for some rainstorms, and i said as much when my roommate asked me this morning which pair of shoes she should wear to work. taking advantage of the nice weather (it'd been raining off and on throughout the week), i rode down to haymarket to get some produce. today's haul included some zucchinis (3/$1), cucumbers (4/$1), passion fruit (1/$3), plums (4/$1), navel oranges (10/$4), and mangoes (4/$3).
