coughing is a state of mind. if you don't think about it, it doesn't happen. if you can some how distract your thoughts to something else, you're able to suppress it. so all of this morning i was playing mind over matter, trying everything to take my mind off of the illness. like for example, examining the toe i smashed into a corner of wall last night. as soon as it happened i looked down apprehensively, almost expecting to see a toenail bent at an impossible angle. fortunately no such trauma, but i'm pretty sure the toe's broken, now i just have to wait for it to heal. it's only painful when i touch it, it's fine when i walk.

renata was coming over tonight so there was two things i had to do today: clean the house and prepare the dinner. after a can of corn for lunch (don't envy my healthy style eating), i started the cleaning process: vacuuming, spraying, brushing, scrubbing, wiping, even did a load of laundry while i was at it.

for dinner, i would be making some grilled chicken with gremolata and cripsy potatoes with bacon, garlic and parsley, a recipe i learned while watching the food network yesterday. i went across the street to buy some ingredients then came back to the house. i bought some camomile tea that really seemed to keep my coughs down.

renata called before she came over. "you don't sound so well," she said when she heard my voice. i reassured her i was quite fine. she'd be bringing some leftovers from her place to make dinner, i agreed because that meant i wouldn't have to do any work. when she arrived, she was packing all sorts of drugs as well, nursing a head cold. and to think i was kind of worried that she'd find out about my condiiton and cancel for fear of getting sick! she also brought cough drops (for me) and easter candy (for her, disguised as a present for me). so there we were, two sick people making dinner on a saturday night, bokchoi with peppers and strips of rotisserie chicken served over pasta. throughout the night she'd sometime say, "i feel bad for you," in regards to my voice, which sounded horrible but i didn't too bad. after dinner we watched some television until renata fell asleep, leaving soon after she woke up.
