my friend gary called me last night. "hey, when are you closing on your house?" "june 19th," i replied. "do you need any help moving?" he asked. "no, i'm all set, i don't have anything big to move anyway." "okay, that's good," he said, then asked, "what do you have planned for tomorrow?" "i don't have any plans tomorrow," i foolishly responded. he then said, "well, i was wondering if you can help me move, i could use the extra hand." and just like that i found myself sacrificing my day off and agreeing to help him even though i didn't want to. why do people even ask me? one look at me would reveal that my body is not designed for heavy lifting. this marks the third time this month that i've helped somebody move (dan and john). at least i'm getting some exercise.

i woke up at noon with a headache. at 1pm i got a call from gary on his cellphone informing me that he was already waiting outside my house. i got into his car and met his friend steve, whom he was also able to convince to sacrifice a monday and move heavy boxes and furnitures. we drove to weymouth to pick up a 14 feet uhaul truck (where another friend eric caught up to us), and then went to his condo in quincy, the one that he was selling and moving out of. we started moving stuff from his second story home out into the truck. fortunately the stairwells were really wide and we had a handtruck to help with the move. today was a hot day, and before i knew it i was all sweaty from all the activity. we moved his couches, coffee table, various lamps, various chairs, bedframe, box spring, mattress (queen size), microwave, bookshelves, dressers, night table, heavy dinner table, and assorted boxes and bags of miscellaneous items. we weren't done until 5:30pm, the time i told gary i had to leave because i didn't want to miss my celtics-nets game. we drove to malden, where he was moving everything to (yet another friend, rory, arriving just in time to take my place as designated mover), and then from malden i got a ride back to belmont. when i got home it was 7pm. 6 hours of moving.

that's how i spent my memorial day monday. to make matters worse, the celtics ended up losing to the nets, series tied 2-2, home court advantage goes back to the nets.
