i went with john, dan, and dan's friend melissa to the kendall square cinema to watch
startup.com. it's kind of scary how similar the story of govworks.com mirrors our own experience at screen house. the movie was fun to watch because we could relate to it on every level, having worked for so long in the dot-com business. parts of the movie were really funny but parts also made me wince because it hit too close to home. i think the documentary can teach surviving dot-com companies a thing or two about the industry and what it does to people. the moral of the story seems to be never mix friendship with business. anytime money's involved, you have a recipe for trouble. things weren't so bad when everyone was making money, just the occasional ego clashing. but when things started getting bad, fingers started pointing and blame started getting dished out. kaleil from the movie seems like a real pompous asshole. i wonder what he's doing now? well, at the end of the movie there was that little blurb about him and tom getting back together and starting a company to help failed dot-coms. i personally think tom is secretly in love with kaleil, otherwise why would he go back to this guy who treated him so badly? observations: kaleil totally looks like the rock, and tom (john's observation) looks like bruce mcculloch. i also thought kaleil's first girlfriend was a dead ringer for carrie-anne moss. overall, i think it's a good movie to go see if you work in the dot-com industry. it's even better if you've left the dot-com industry, because it's not as scary!
