couldn't fall asleep last night, so i spent it surfing the web in bed, trying to find some suitable plant lighting with more wattage for my aquariums. i also shopped around for lenses, debating whether it's better to have image stabilizing versus bigger aperture, and what kind of wide angle lens i should get. it wasn't until 8:30 in the morning with the sun fully out did i finally fall asleep. i woke up 4 hours later around noon, but fell asleep again, waking up later at 2pm.

i can't get over the news story about the escaped tiger mauling in san francisco. although one person died, there were two others who survived and look to make a full recovery. imagine the kind of street cred you'd get for surviving a siberian tiger attack! and the fact it happened in san francisco, and not in some siberian forest! why did the police have to shoot and kill the tiger though? it's not like we have a surplus of tigers in the world; at last count, they're kind of critically endangered in their natural habitat, without any help from san francisco's finest. don't zoo police have something less lethal, like elephant tranquilizer? or a net? in my opinion, a single tiger life is worth more than many human lives. also imagine the conversation back at the precint: "officer gordon - tiger killer!" even the kid who died, you have to admit that's a pretty cool way to get killed, to be actually mauled by an escaped tiger in a zoo. the odds of that happening is astronomical. the most startling information to come out of this case is the fact that the tiger (tatiana) was only 4 years old. a 4 year old escaped from the zoo and wrecked havoc on the city. how many 4 year olds can say that?

julie came over in the evening for dinner. she brought some birthday presents, since i don't believe in christmas: some frog magnets, a jar of fluff, and an oversized fluff mug. i made japanese tonkatsu again. this time the vegetable oil wasn't hot enough so first two pieces took a long time to deep fry until i turned up the heat to medium. afterwards we watched the 40 year old virgin then julie went back home in the rain.

in sports news, the NFL does football fans a solid by opening up saturday's broadcast of the patriots-giants game. so check this out: saturday night, not only is local channel 5 (ABC affiliate) going to broadcast the game (they were going to be the original broadcasters anyway), but local channels 4 (CBS affiliate) and 7 (NBC affiliate) will also be showing it as well. other than latest breaking news, i've never seen all 3 networks broadcast the same program before. this game went from just a little football fan highlight into something truly epic and historical. all across america, people will be tuned in now, either rooting for or against the patriots to shatter the record.
