although seriously hyped up in the guidebooks, i say you can take a pass at both the national palace and the national museum on your next visit to phnom penh. the friend's restaurant next door however, serving asian tapas in an artsy bohemian decor, is worth a visit. walking back to the guesthouse, i saw a woman selling some lotus seed pods and i thought i'd give it a try. they don't taste so good, kind of like peas but without the sweetness (slightly bitter in fact). later, in the evening, i got brave enough to venture by myself at night and wander the street market located just behind the guesthouse. i had bu dieh gon, which i first saw on a taiwanese travel show: it's essentially a hard-boiled egg with a duck embryo still inside. it tasted weird, and i tried not to look. i survived the experience, hope it doesn't make me sick though.
